- Microcom Announces Carbon Copy for the Mac 2.0
- Breaks Price Barrier at $99 per User;
- $299 For Unlimited Users Per AppleTalk Zone
-
- Norwood, MA -- May 6, 1991 -- Microcom, Inc., today announced Version 2.0 of
- its popular Carbon Copy™ remote control and file transfer software package for
- Macintosh computers. With file transfer speeds up to 250% faster, Version 2.0
- is System 7.0 compatible and offers the first virus detection capabilities in a
- remote control package. At an unprecedented $99 per AppleTalk/serial user or
- $299 for unlimited network users per single AppleTalk zone, Carbon Copy for the
- Mac breaks traditional price barriers.
-
- "We've updated the product in response to our users' requests for more
- sophisticated functionality. With Version 2.0, users now enjoy a broader array
- of features without sacrificing any of Carbon Copy's well-known ease of use,"
- stated Michael S. Jablon, director of Microcom's Macintosh Product Group.
- "Moreover, our aggressive pricing dovetails with Apple's new marketing strategy
- to reach a broader range of users, providing more remote workers and network
- managers the opportunity to benefit from remote computing."
-
- The unlimited user pack is targeted to the network manager or resource person
- who assists other Mac users on an ongoing basis. The value pricing enables
- network managers to cost-effectively install Carbon Copy on all Macs in their
- networks. Previously, the expense of purchasing remote control products in
- large quantities precluded network managers from the benefits of remote
- control. "Finally, the Macintosh network manager can afford a remote control
- package that will help him do his job better," Jablon asserted.
-
- In addition to value pricing, Version 2.0 is now the first remote control
- package to include the virus detection capabilities of Microcom's award-winning
- Virex® anti-virus software.
-
- The new built-in virus detection capabilities enable Carbon Copy to communicate
- with Microcom's Virex INIT before file transfers are completed. If Virex
- detects the presence of a virus, it immediately notifies Carbon Copy so that
- infected files are not passed from one user to another, thus restricting the
- spread of viruses.
-
- Version 2.0 extends Carbon Copy's security options to include multi-level
- password entry capabilities. The Host can now set up a series of passwords
- determining the level of access for users at various levels. For example, one
- user's password may enable him full access to the Host while another user may
- be restricted to view capabilities only.
-
- CallBack security offers an added layer of protection by forcing remote users
- to enter passwords and receive a call back from the Host if they are
- authorized.
-
- Additional new features include:
-
- • "Ghost Screen"™ capabilities, which enable users to run most Macintosh IIs
- without a video card and monitor, providing cost-effective Macintosh server
- functionality.
-
- • Modem scripting and built-in editing capabilities allow Carbon Copy for the
- Mac users to customize their configurations based on a standard AT command
- set.
-
- Introduced in March 1990, Carbon Copy for the Mac enables users to work
- remotely, provide remote and local technical support, share files and group
- documents, and makes remote and local training sessions possible.
-
- Carbon Copy for the Mac Version 2.0 is available 30 days ARO from all major
- Macintosh retailers and distributors. The product retails for $99 per user
- and is list priced at $299 for unlimited network users per single AppleTalk
- zone. Upgrades will be sent to registered users at no cost.
